Nelia Gardner White

Nelia Gardner White(1894–1957) was an American author who began her career as a kindergarten teacher, writing stories for children and young adults before turning to adult fiction. Although much of her work is now out of print, she was a popular author in her day. She gained national recognition after winning the Westminster Press Fiction Contest for her novelNo Trumpet Before Him(1948).

White wrote twenty-five novels and hundreds of stories, appearing in major American magazines likeGood HousekeepingandLadies’ Home Journal. She had a gift for developing rich interior lives for her characters, capturing their quiet struggles and personal growth.The Pink House(1950), a historical novel set in the early 20th century, showcases her talents in a dark, decades-spanning family saga told with nuance and compassion.
